Georgia changed what it teaches in mathematics and then changed how it tests it, both inside the last three years. The K-12 standards that reached classrooms in 2023-24 were written in Georgia to replace the Georgia Standards of Excellence, and the Milestones assessments were redeveloped to match them. An online math tutor working with a Georgia family needs to be teaching the current standards rather than the ones a slightly older workbook was written for, because the emphasis genuinely moved.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards
Adopted in 2021 and in classrooms since the 2023-24 school year, Georgia's current standards were drafted by Georgia teachers with the stated aim of removing the remaining traces of Common Core. They replaced the Georgia Standards of Excellence outright, which matters practically: material published before 2023 is aligned to a framework the state has stopped using. The most visible change for a parent is emphasis rather than content — mathematical modelling and statistical reasoning now run through every grade instead of appearing as separate units, which is why Georgia homework increasingly asks a child to explain a situation rather than only to compute an answer. The standards are published by the Georgia Department of Education.
Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade
Milestones EOG covers English language arts and mathematics in grades 3 through 8, with science added at grades 5 and 8 and social studies at grade 8. Testing falls towards the end of the year, typically April or early May. The mathematics assessments were redeveloped for 2023-24 to align with the new standards — so practice material written for the older GSE-era Milestones is now testing against a framework that no longer exists, which is a trap worth knowing about before buying a workbook.
What Each Year Looks Like in Georgia
The mathematics is broadly the same everywhere. What changes is when Georgia tests it, and what it expects by then. Open a grade for the signs to watch for and where we would start.
1st Grade in GA
No Milestones — Georgia's state testing starts at grade 3. What is different about this cohort is that they are the first to meet Georgia's rewritten standards from their very first lesson, with modelling built in rather than bolted on, so nothing they bring home matches an older sibling's workbook.
2nd Grade in GA
The last unmeasured year, and the first cohort taught under Georgia's new standards from the very start. A second grader shaky on place value meets Milestones for the first time twelve months later.
3rd Grade in GA
The first Milestones EOG, in April or early May. Multiplication and division within 100 arrive the same year, which is a lot of new ground to cover before a test that lands near the end of it.
4th Grade in GA
Multi-digit multiplication and fraction equivalence. This is the grade where Georgia's added emphasis on modelling starts showing up in homework as word problems that want an explanation, not just a number.
5th Grade in GA
Decimals and fraction operations, and one of the two years Georgia also tests science on Milestones. Spring gets crowded, which is an argument for starting the mathematics in the autumn.
6th Grade in GA
Ratios and negative numbers, and the first year statistical reasoning becomes a visible strand rather than a light touch. Sixth grade is where arithmetic gaps stop being survivable.
7th Grade in GA
Proportional reasoning, the idea most of high-school mathematics is built on — and the one Georgia's modelling emphasis leans on hardest. Expect Milestones items that hand your child a situation rather than a ratio, which is a different skill from cross-multiplying and is rarely taught as one.
8th Grade in GA
Grade 8 Milestones in mathematics, plus science and social studies in the same year — the heaviest testing year in Georgia's middle grades. Worth planning the mathematics around rather than into.

Are Georgia's math standards still the GSE?
No. Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards replaced the Georgia Standards of Excellence and have been in classrooms since 2023-24. It is worth checking the date on anything you buy: a workbook labelled GSE is aligned to the previous framework, and the Milestones were rebuilt to match the new one.
Why is my child's homework asking them to explain instead of solve?
That is the change, not a quirk of your school. The current standards run mathematical modelling and statistical reasoning through every grade rather than parking them in separate units. Children who are fine at computing often find this genuinely harder, and it is a teachable skill rather than a talent.
My older child learned the GSE and my younger one is on the new standards. Is there a gap?
Usually a seam rather than a gap. Children who changed framework mid-way through elementary school sometimes met a topic under one sequence and then had it assumed under another, and the join is where things go quietly missing. It is worth checking rather than assuming, and it is one of the first things we look at with a Georgia family.
